Chanel. The name conjures images of effortless Parisian chic, timeless elegance, and, of course, impeccable quality. When it comes to beauty products, Chanel holds a revered position, often associated with luxury, innovation, and lasting power. So, when I purchased Chanel Black Satin polish a few years ago, upon its initial release, I anticipated a product that would live up to the brand's prestigious reputation. My expectations were high, fueled by my long-standing love for Chanel's Vamp, a cornerstone of my 90s nail polish collection. However, my experience with Chanel Black Satin has proven somewhat disappointing, leaving me questioning whether the hype truly matches the reality. This review aims to delve deeper into my experience, exploring the polish's performance, longevity, and overall value, while also considering the broader context of Chanel's nail polish range.

My initial foray into the world of Chanel nail polish was in the 90s with the iconic Vamp – a deep, brooding crimson that was, and arguably still is, the epitome of sophisticated darkness. It possessed a richness and depth of colour that few other polishes could match, coupled with a surprisingly impressive staying power. This established a benchmark in my mind, a standard against which I would inevitably compare all subsequent Chanel nail polishes, including the Black Satin. This expectation of exceptional quality and longevity, born from my positive experience with Vamp, ultimately contributed to my disappointment with the Black Satin.

The Black Satin polish itself is undeniably beautiful. The colour is a deep, inky black with a subtle satin finish, avoiding the overly glossy sheen of some black polishes. This subtle satin effect gives it a sophisticated, almost velvety texture, lending itself to a more understated elegance than a high-shine black. The application is smooth, with a good consistency that prevents streaking, a common issue with darker shades. The brush is also well-designed, allowing for precise application even around the cuticles. In these aspects, the polish certainly lives up to the Chanel name, showcasing the brand's commitment to high-quality formulation and elegant presentation.

However, where the Chanel Black Satin falters is in its longevity. The advertised "long-lasting" claim falls considerably short of the mark in my experience. While the first day post-application looks flawless, exhibiting the promised rich colour and subtle satin finish, by the second day, I began to notice chipping. This chipping wasn't confined to the tips, as one might expect with normal wear and tear, but rather occurred across the nail surface, indicating a lack of adhesion to the nail bed. By day three, the polish was significantly marred, requiring immediate removal and reapplication. This lack of durability is particularly disappointing, especially considering the price point of Chanel nail polish, which sits firmly in the luxury segment.
